This letter has been photocopied to the point of distortion; however, it is legible enough for one to determine that in past years, Church authority claimed precedence over Scripture. There are also many documents from other sources that convey the same message--church authority claims to exceed Christ's instructions to "teach them to observe whatsoever I have commanded you", and that includes keeping all of God's law (Matthew 5:17; 28:19).
     John L. Day's son, Russell, says he was eleven years old when his father wrote this letter and receive this Catholic response. A religious book salesman previously visited their ranch telling them that Catholics boast of changing the Sabbath commandment from Saturday to Sunday. This prompted John Day to write this pointed inquiry to the Vatican.
    His son, Russell is still alive, and on May 24, 2005, I talked with him and his wife. At 82 years of age, he told me he and his sister Matalyn both saw his father's letter and the Catholic response many times. Russell says he was tending animals on the farm when he heard his father shouting for him to come and see the letter the Catholic Church sent.
     According to Russell, his father was a Sunday-keeping Baptist in 1934. He, as well as his family, did exactly what the letter recommended, they started keeping Saturday, then they joined the Seventh-day Adventist Church.
